We use a PEO to hire and provide benefits to our staff of 13, about 2/3 of whom accept healthcare benefits. The Foundation pays 80% of premiums on all plans.

Last year we had an enormous healthcare premium jump with our then-PEO, Trinet, which precipitated a search for a new PEO. We landed on Justworks for multiple reasons; the primary driver was savings on healthcare premiums. We’re one year in with Justworks and have been relatively happy with them so far.

Here’s the message we sent to staff ahead of open enrollment:

“TLDR: Open enrollment for the 2026-27 plan year runs September 17-28, with the new plan year starting November 1. We expect premiums on the two active plans our staff selected in 2025-26 to increase by 7% (HSA/HDHP plan) and 13% ($0 deductible plan). (We will still offer two other plans, too, with different cost and benefit structures). These increases are in line with or below what comparable organizations are seeing this year. Even with these increases, our premiums remain roughly 23% below what we faced at TriNet last year – and on par with the premiums we paid about three years ago.”

One of our plans is an HDHP, and the Foundation funds an HSA up to the amount of the deductible, which works out to save money for both the foundation and covered employees compared to a zero-deductible plan.
