Associate Director, Program & Grants Management
Organization: Milken Institute, Strategic Philanthropy
Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid)The Milken Institute’s Strategic Philanthropy team is seeking an Associate Director, Program & Grants Management to help drive innovative philanthropic investments that advance biomedical research and improve health outcomes. This position plays a key role in managing research funding programs, prize competitions, and strategic grantmaking initiatives across a portfolio of health and medical research efforts.
The ideal candidate combines grants management expertise with a strong understanding of the biomedical research and philanthropic funding ecosystem. They will work closely with researchers, foundations, patient advocacy organizations, and other partners to support high-impact funding strategies and ensure effective program execution.
Key Responsibilities (additional ones on job posting)
- Manage the full lifecycle of research grants and funding programs, including solicitation, application review, due diligence, award administration, reporting, and closeout.
- Oversee prize funding cycles and challenge-based funding initiatives, including program design, reviewer coordination, award administration, and impact tracking.
- Develop and implement grantmaking policies, procedures, and operational best practices to ensure efficiency, transparency, and compliance.
- Build and maintain relationships with researchers, nonprofit organizations, foundations, patient advocacy groups, and other key stakeholders.
- Track program milestones, budgets, deliverables, and outcomes across multiple funding initiatives.
- Support strategic planning, partnership development, and the launch of new philanthropic programs and funding opportunities.
- Collaborate across Milken Institute teams to coordinate communications, events, reporting, and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Prepare presentations, briefings, and analyses for internal and external audiences.
Qualifications (additional ones on job posting)
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in public health, life sciences, health policy, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred.
- 5-7+ years of experience in grants management, research administration, scientific program management, philanthropy, foundation operations, or a related field.
- Experience managing research grants, funding programs, fellowships, prizes, or other competitive funding mechanisms.
- Familiarity with the philanthropic, scientific, and health funding ecosystem, including knowledge of key funders, research institutions, and philanthropic organizations operating in the space.
- Familiarity with funding mechanisms and nonprofit structures.
- Strong understanding of grantmaking processes, compliance, and program evaluation.
- Excellent project management, analytical, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and strong stakeholder engagement capabilities.
