Arthritis National Research Foundation
Director of Development
Supervisor: CEO
Classification: Full-time, exempt
Location: ANRF is a fully remote organization, candidate must live near a major metropolitan airport for travel.
The Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF) mission is to provide initial research funding to brilliant, investigative scientists with new ideas to cure arthritis and related autoimmune diseases. Since 1970, the Arthritis National Research Foundation has funded arthritis research to understand the causes, prevention and development of new treatments for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, juvenile arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. The Arthritis National Research Foundation provides arthritis research grants to scientists at major universities and research institutes across America.
Position
The Director of Development will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer. They will create and implement the national development strategy and deliver on the annual development/revenue budget. The Director will be responsible for organization and execution of the annual fund, including direct mail, digital fundraising, data entry, maintaining the database, stewardship as well as identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts. This position will identify, engage, solicit, cultivate and steward current and prospective donors in expanding their financial support for the Foundation. The position supervises the Development Specialist.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Development responsibilities:
- Develop and implement comprehensive development strategies to sustain and substantially grow all existing donor streams including foundations, major donors and annual and mid-level individual giving
- Partner with ANRF leadership to develop short- and long-term strategic fundraising goals
- Oversee prospect cultivation, solicitation and closing of major gift contributions nationally
- Direct, manage and execute all giving appeals, including emails, mailed letters, and digital strategy
- Evaluate all campaigns and appeals to develop analysis on performance and plan for future appeals
- Adapt fundraising strategies based on emerging trends and share timely, industry-relevant insights to ensure donor appeals remain current and impactful.
- Oversee and design/implement as needed comprehensive policies and procedures to support successful execution of development initiatives
- Ensure success of all fundraising events/activities (such as peer-to-peer/fundraising, virtual galas etc.)
- Maintain profiles at Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and any other charity search engines to ensure they are accurate and up to date
- Translate ANRF initiatives and arthritis and autoimmune research information to prospects and donors in a clear, understandable manner
- Develop and monitor the annual budget for Development
- With Development Specialist, cultivate donor prospects, maintain relationships with annual donors, and transition qualified individuals into the major gift portfolio for ongoing engagement
- Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Department on producing donor collateral including the organization’s annual report, impact report, website assets, email and social media communication
- Manage and enhance the process of donor acknowledgement, recognition, cultivation and stewardship. Monitors to ensure the timely acknowledgement of all gifts
- Prepare monthly and quarterly statistical reports on campaign activity for use by management, the Board of Directors and Board of Director committees. Attends board meetings and present Development updates
- Alongside the Finance Manager and the Development Associate, oversee the monthly financial reconciliation process including data accuracy, process and task management
- Manage contracts and continually assesses ROI for all development platforms including: EveryAction, iWave, Trello, etc
- Participate in professional growth activities
- Able to occasionally participate in meetings, events and cultivation activities outside of regular business hours
- Other duties as assigned
Database Responsibilities:
- Maintain an accurate and up-to-date CRM database that serves as the basis for prospect and donor oversight and analysis
- Oversee the Development Specialist on the collection of all donor and prospect information in the database
- Building and managing coding/tracking systems and data infrastructure for the CRM
- Creating and overseeing new structures and processes for donor/donation entry and coding
- Filing paperwork for matching gifts, workplace giving and tribute gifts
- Updating and organizing prospect research data in constituent records
- Resolving donation-related problems, including follow-up letters, emails and calls
Manages the Development Associate to execute database responsibilities including:
- Processing daily credit card batch
- Preparing data for batch entry from various sources
- Entering batches into CRM according to established procedures and maintaining procedures
- Updating and inputting constituent records
- Investigating and merging duplicates contacts
- Provides donor support by answering phone calls and e-mails about general issues/ donations
- Set clear, measurable performance goals and expectations for the Development Specialist
- Foster a positive, collaborative work environment that encourages engagement and accountability
- Conduct regular check-ins and address performance issues promptly and constructively, following organizational guidelines
- Ensure compliance with workplace policies, including safety, confidentiality, and ethical standards
- Document performance discussions, goals, and development plans for organizational records
Qualifications / Skills
- BA/BS or equivalent required
- 5+ years of professional experience in a similar role in a nonprofit setting
- Demonstrated success with identifying prospects and raising funds from individual donors, and/or foundations
- Qualified to implement new fundraising initiatives, such as major gifts, corporate sponsorships, events, etc.
- Ability and comfort with using a CRM to manage prospects and donors, to generate reports and conduct research on future prospects
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with various constituents, leading and encouraging growth in fundraising capabilities with the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff, and others.
- Excellent writing and presentation skills, with experience creating development-focused materials such as impact reports, donor correspondence, grant proposals and other materials
- Organized, team player with a strong attention to detail who thinks strategically about growing revenue to better fulfill the ANRF mission
- Experience in prospect development, preferably in the healthcare or disease-specific field.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment with all types of staff, including remote colleagues
- Proficiency with one or more relational databases, Microsoft Office suite; experience with online resources such as iWave, Charity Navigator, and fundraising software
- Ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders and adhere to the highest standards of ethics in the field of development
- Demonstrated success in devising sophisticated cultivation and solicitation strategies
- Demonstrated success leading a geographically remote development team working as a collaborative leader across departments

Additional Information:
- Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this position is $125,000 – $135,000
