Using HRA Analyzer to understand non-profit funding for health research: Lessons from Doris Duke Foundation [October 30, 2024]
The Program Evaluation Community hosted a dynamic discussion on using HRA Analyzer to assess grant data by health research areas. Betsy Myers and Kevin Sia shared results of their data for HRA member organizations, followed by a discussion on opportunities for expanded support of health research based on these findings.
Takeaways from Betsy and Kevin’s data analyses include:
- HRA members as a group support biomedical research more than clinical, health services, and population & society
- Grants to support clinical, health services, and population research are typically more expensive than biomedical
- Trends over time include a decrease in percent of dollars awarded for biomedical; increase in clinical; population & society relatively flat; heath services fluctuates
- Substantial drop in grant numbers and dollars during COVID
- PCORI has a major role in support of clinical and health services research
- Similar trends of awards and dollars granted with NIH as with Health Research Alliance
- Interpretation of trends may differ based on the classification system used (e.g., Health Research Area compared to RCDC)
