This session briefly reviewed the concept of a logic model. It focused on how logic models can be used in practice to develop a new program or modify an existing program, and to create an evaluation plan which can inform ongoing learning and planning to increase program effectiveness. Purpose of this Grants Administration Handbook Part of HRA’s strategic plan was to create a grantmaking handbook specifically targeted for use by its members—health research funders. Handbooks exist for grantmakers, but none specifically outline the various complexities and considerations of biomedical research funding, and with this handbook HRA aims to fill that gap. Logic Models facilitate effective program planning, implementation, and evaluation. A program logic model is a picture of how your program works – the theory and assumptions underlying the program. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation uses Logic Models as a learning and management tool throughout a program’s life. They have created this guide to help create logic models that can provide a road map of your program, highlighting how it is expected to work, what activities need to come before others, and how desired outcomes are achieved.
Several years ago, HRA members collaborated with a consultant to create this Logic Model Template for developing and evaluating a program targeted toward Early Career Investigators. Included as a part of this logic model are suggestions for measures of both mid and long-term outcomes as well as impact. The logic model is both a framework and a way of thinking that helps us develop results-based programs. The 2021 Strategic Plan was developed to enhance HRA’s value to HRA member organizations. The strategies that the Strategic Planning committee recommended to achieve those goals were the result of much input from the membership. These are designed to increase HRA members’ ability (directly or indirectly) to enhance the impact of their investment in research, and by doing so achieve HRA’s mission.
