As we all have experienced, 2020 was the year of hosting virtual events. Have you spent hours researching the how-to’s of managing virtual meetings? This session will discuss the nuts and bolts of organizing and facilitating online events and will showcase studies of best practices in hosting your event. Dr. Arne Bakker will highlight what has worked well, how to encourage a culture of open communication and meaningful participation with your audience, and how to select the most appropriate platform for your event. In addition to Dr. Bakker, a panel of HRA members will share stories of how they have incorporated virtual tools into other areas of grantmaking such as conducting virtual board meetings, site visits, as well as connecting with grantees, and advisors.

NASEM Toolkit for Fostering Open Science Practices

This session will focus on informing HRA members about the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Roundtable on Aligning Incentives for Open Science and what funders can do to promote and incentivize open science practices. Some concepts that are addressed by the toolkit include:
· Open access of publications (immediate or delayed)
· Preregistration
· Encouraging use of preprints
· Providing incentives for open behavior
· Encouraging or incentivizing reusing available datasets (such as supporting hack-a-thons, etc.)
· Providing training/funding for training on open science practices for researchers
· As there is an entire session dedicated to Data Sharing issues, Data Sharing will NOT be covered in this session
The session will begin with presentations about the tools being developed by members of the NASEM Roundtable to foster Open Science practices. After those presentations, we will hear from HRA members about their experiences in implementing various Open Science policies and incentivizing Open Science among applicants and awardees. They will share strategies they are implementing and talk about any pushback received from leadership, universities, or the researchers themselves, and how they overcame those and other challenges.

Fostering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness Within the Research Workforce

The session will focus on racial disparities and opportunities to foster and support diversity, equity, and inclusiveness within the research workforce, specifically at the postdoc and early career faculty level. Candidates from underrepresented backgrounds may lack the social structures and networks to sustain career development in research, so the role of professional communities and mentorship relationships may be even more important. Can foundations work with academic institutions, federal funders, and other stakeholders to address this through recruitment, retention, mentorship, and networking strategies? What are the key parameters and metrics of success to consider?

The Future Workplace: Post-pandemic Workforce and the Disruption in the Workplace; Remote, In-person, and Hybrid Models

For many organizations, the 2020 COVID pandemic forced a shift in workplace operations from in-person, to fully remote, or to a hybrid model. Many offices will not be able to open and operate at full capacity for a long time. At the same time, some people don’t want to go back to the office, even when it’s safe to do so. Now is the time to set up your hybrid workforce to succeed – no matter where they work. In this session we will discuss how we can successfully navigate the new world of working as a hybrid team. Lisette Sutherland, our external speaker will share creative ideas for what it means to be “present” at work and how to create that sense of team even when you’re virtual. Following that presentation, a panel of HRA members will share their post-pandemic plans and ideas, spanning from returning to in-person workplace, hybrid models, and remaining remote.

Data Sharing and Data Management Plans

Per a recent survey to HRA membership, several organizations have a data-sharing/management policy in place or are considering developing one. This session will highlight the experiences of a few organizations currently implementing these policies. We will hear about specific aspects of their policies and implementation practices including: definition of a robust data-sharing/management plan, guidance to researchers on how to create a robust plan and specific repositories or tools to use, and what a robust plan looks like, internal compliance practices, and more. This presentation follows a webinar held on Tuesday, February 23 where HRA members heard directly from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) about the evolution of two different federal data management plans and how private funders can forward the data-sharing agenda.
