Scientists from Minority-Serving Institutions and Their Participation in Grant Peer Review Webinar [June 8, 2022]

For its June meeting, the DEI Community learned more about how peer review may contribute to funding disparities across racial groups and between minority-serving institutions (MSIs) and traditionally White institutions (TWIs).

We heard from two of the authors of the publication “Scientists from Minority-Serving Institutions and Their Participation in Grant Peer Review”. One of the findings they discussed is that despite similar levels of grant submission and interest by scientists at MSIs, they indicated much lower levels of participation in grant review than scientists at TWIs.

Stephen A. Gallo, PhD
Chief Scientist, AIBS

Dr. Stephen Gallo is the Chief Scientist for the Scientific Peer Advisory and Review Services (SPARS) division of the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), providing scientific, technical and administrative oversight over peer review operations and senior leadership to AIBS SPARS. He has led AIBS efforts to analyze peer review data and publish anonymized results in the open-access literature to further expand the empirical data upon which best practices in peer review are based. He has also worked to foster a community of like-minded researchers interested in understanding peer review decision-making, through collaboration, communication, and resource development; including developing a bibliography of articles on peer review and a collection of open-access peer review data (see link below). He received his PhD in biophysics from the University of Buffalo and worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in the field of HIV research. DaJoie R. Croslan, PhD
Senior Scientist and Program Manager, AIBS

Dr. DaJoie Croslan is the Chief Operations and Diversity Officer at the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) responsible for the effective, planning, direction, and operation of activities of major significance to the organization. She works closely with staff and stakeholders groups to identify and develop solutions to operational challenges, to promote AIBS programs, to cultivate relationships and to ensure that AIBS is working internally and externally to foster a more diverse and equitable organization and society. She serves as the chair of the AIBS Diversity Committee and oversees all of AIBS’ diversity initiatives. Dr. Croslan received a PhD in Biomedical Science with a concentration in Neuroscience from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA and worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the Georgetown University Medical Center’s Lombardi Cancer Institute.
